About this event

A Deep Dive Into Portraiture

PPSCV is proud to offer an in-studio presentation with in-depth demonstrations of two different types of portraiture. Using a collegial and collaborative discussion format, Marcus Araiza and Davide China will explain and demonstrate with professional models the best practices in portraiture. This presentation is intended for both beginner and intermediate photography audiences.

Takeaways

Attendees will come away with a better understanding of styles in head shot portraiture as well as lighting and posing techniques for mastering them. In addition, attendees will have learned fresh approaches to creating conceptual fine art portraiture.

This event will have 2 segments:

In the first segment, Marcus Araiza will examine the history and the different approaches to headshots. Marcus will discuss the past and current trends in headshots for both commercial and theatrical photos.

Here are a few examples to whet your appetite!

In the second segment, Davide China will explore conceptual fine art portraiture, including posing, lighting and the use of props.

Conceptual fine art portrait photography uses photography as a medium to explore ideas, emotions, and concepts, going beyond simple documentation to create images that evoke meaning and spark a reaction in the viewer.

Davide China

Davide China’s love affair with photography began when he picked up his first camera.  Over forty-five years ago, first as an amateur explorer devouring all things photography — he studied the work of the great masters, followed the contemporary pros that experimented and challenged the norms. He immersed himself in the imagery created in fashion, music and film. This mix of learning: education, mentors, plenty of trial and error inspired him, challenged him, and released his creativity.

Davide’s career from a weekend warrior wedding photographer to a freelancer to a studio owner earned him recognition among his peers and awards in professional competitions. Davide takes pride in knowing the awards were mostly for the images created for his portrait and wedding clients. Throughout his career his body of work, in addition to portraiture and weddings, includes: product, still life, commercial, fine art, street, fashion, conceptual, and illustrative photography.

Today, as a semi-retired pro, Davide continues to create story-worthy images. Mostly he works on his personal projects, takes select client work, and photographs his grandkids — a lot!  Davide’s storytelling journey continues: learning, experimenting, and pushing the boundaries of the norms.

Marcus Araiza
