About this event

For our October meeting we are in-person again and back at the Almaden Church on Blossom Hill Road.
We welcome Paul Tumason to educate us about creating classical portraits.

In the Pursuit of Portraiture
By Paul Tumason

Presentation Summary:

What does it mean to be creative in the domain of portraiture? Hasn't everything been done before?
But photographing people introduces an essential and unknown element for my self-assignment to produce something creative.

What do I look for?  What will be satisfying to both the sitter and to me? Will it be original? How do I avoid settling for producing “eye candy”?

I will offer examples of finding subjects for the studio:
  • Erica, the girl waiting for a bus in front of the Alameda studio in San Jose
  • Thalia, high school senior who’s mother was selling a few ballerina outfits on Craigslist
  • Olivia whose family was about to move to Florida from our mountain community, whose little brother was a friend of one of my grandsons
  • Avery, an adolescent girl whom I saw in a tv movie (Expecting Amish), I could tell she was a ballerina, friended her mom on FB. Her mom had a brother in San Jose. Now Avery has been a regular on General Hospital daytime soap opera!
  • Emily, whom I met with her husband when we were selling some lumber at our home. Turns out she was a dancer, and a bee keeper!
  • Ebony, her grandmother worked at one of my doctors’ office
  • Natalia Tafolla, Morelia, Mexico. San Juan Hotel 2010
I will also describe my process:
  • During the sitting, making it fun for the sitter and me! I’m thinking about what would be a telling portrait for that subject
  • Selecting the favorites into a set of as many images that have as much variety as possible … sometimes only one is all I need to fulfill my offer to the sitter
  • Editing, all the while thinking about what I would like and what they might like, and what would be creative or at least different from other images of mine.
  • Simplifying the composition
  • Most often, painting in Corel Painter
  • Printing in Photoshop CS6

There will be a questions and answers period at the end of the presentation.

Paul owns and operates Paul Tumason Portraits which he opened in San Jose in 1972.  At the start, he did a variety of photographic assignments including weddings, but since 1980, he has concentrated  on classical studio portraiture.

He graduated from San Jose State University with a B.S. degree in Industrial Technology in 1965, Paul also served in the U.S. Navy Reserve for 12 years achieving the rank of Lieutenant.  He also worked as a professional musician during and after college, playing ragtime banjo.

Paul and his wife Kathy live in the Santa Cruz Coastal Mountains, south of San Jose and they have 5 grown (out of college) children and 8 grandchildren.

He has occasionally taught classical studio portraiture to photographers at schools for professional photographers (Winona, Mid America Institute for Professional Photography, West Coast School,  and Golden Gate Schools, California Photographic Workshop) and conventions in the U.S., Canada, and once in Oaxaca.

Occasionally,  Paul lectures or gives seminars and classes in classical portraiture.  His knowledge of portrait art has given him a tremendous insight into the psychology of what makes his clients excited and thankful for their portraits.  He has met his clients’ somewhat high expectations of their own perceptions with his own artistic style. He has become well established as one of the nation’s finest portrait photographers.
