About this event
PPSCV presents Peter Thoeny of QualityHDR Photography in our Hybrid Monthly Meeting for May 2022.
You can attend this event ONLINE via Zoom and IN-PERSON hosted by San Jose Camera and Video, one of the few stores where you can still get personal expert service from photographers and handle real equipment.
All are welcome to register for the IN-PERSON activity - it's a FREE Open House. Come and browse the store before we start, meet and greet our members, share some pizza, watch the presentation, and join in the live Q&A.
Curious about tethering your camera for portraits?
As a bonus for those who join us in-store we will also have a hands-on demonstration of camera tethering both wired and wireless.
Plus you may win a door prize of a San Jose Camera gift check or PPSCV membership
Peter Thoeny will be presenting in-person, and you can join us virtually too.

Creative Composition on Location, by Peter Thoeny
What makes a compelling image? What draws a viewer in, what keeps them coming back to look at an image? What generates the subconscious double-take? It has a lot to do with two primary themes: composition and emotional connection. This talk introduces various compositional techniques you can draw upon to create images that stand out.
In this talk you will learn:
- Balance: symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial
- Framing, foreground, background
- Proportions
- Vantage point
- Patterns
- Colors and contrast
- Color vs black and white
- Leading lines, flow, entry and exit point
- Be in the flow, curiosity, synchronicity
- Build an emotional connection
Peter Thoeny - Bio
Peter Thoeny loves to travel and has been fascinated with photography since his high school years in Switzerland. He learned to appreciate composition when he created charcoal drawings and paintings while visiting Italy and other countries within Europe. Film was expensive in those days, and when traveling on a shoestring, he had to carefully use and compose shots using his Rollei 35. Peter has lived in the Silicon Valley for 20+ years, and is an instructor at the Digital Photo Academy teaching composition in the San Francisco Bay Area. Peter specializes in naturalistic HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography. Although he is most comfortable with landscape photography, he tries not to limit himself, and is always open to learning new topics and techniques with an open mind.
